Review The Verrient

Oh my goodness, The Verrient! Where do I even begin? As a longtime fan of Don Elliott's work, having devoured his previous books and short stories, I approached this final installment of The Story of Rain with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. Would it live up to the incredibly high bar he'd set? Would the intricate world he'd built come to a satisfying conclusion? The answer, my friends, is a resounding YES.

Elliott masterfully weaves together the threads of this epic saga, bringing the simmering conflict in the Outlands to a breathtaking crescendo. The stakes are impossibly high; extinction looms, and the terrifying edani advance relentlessly. I found myself completely immersed in the desperate struggle for survival, feeling the sun-scorched heat of the battlefields and the chilling dampness of the Underworld. The sheer scale of the conflict, coupled with the deeply personal struggles of Djeodi, Roan, and Talarain, created a truly unforgettable reading experience.

What sets Elliott apart, I think, is his remarkable ability to craft characters that feel real, flawed, and deeply human. I've grown to care deeply about these characters over the course of the trilogy, and The Verrient allowed me to witness their growth, their losses, and their ultimate triumphs. The emotional journey was intense; there were moments of heartbreaking sorrow that left me utterly crushed, followed by exhilarating moments of reunion and hard-won hope. It's a testament to Elliott's writing that I felt such a visceral connection to their fates.

The world-building continues to be astounding. The Outlands, with their unique creatures and breathtaking landscapes, felt vividly real. Each location, from the windswept dunes to the mysterious Underworld, is meticulously described, allowing the reader to fully immerse themselves in the story. I found myself constantly captivated by the details, the descriptions transporting me to this fantastical realm. And the battles? Epic doesn't even begin to cover it. The descriptions were so vivid I felt like I was right there, witnessing the clash of airships and the relentless swarm of seaspiders.

While The Verrient brings a satisfying conclusion to the overarching narrative, it's not a simplistic resolution. Elliott expertly ties up loose ends, yet leaves room for intriguing possibilities. It’s the kind of ending that resonates long after you’ve turned the final page, leaving you contemplating the characters and their journeys. The future of the Outlands remains unwritten, and a small part of me desperately hopes that Elliott will choose to revisit this world and these characters. I'm already eager to embark on another adventure within his incredible imagination. This book is not just a conclusion; it’s a testament to the power of storytelling, leaving a lasting impact long after the final page is turned. I highly, highly recommend this book – and the entire series – to anyone who appreciates a truly immersive and emotionally resonant fantasy adventure.
